Woman of the Week: Ellen DeGeneres

This Wednesday’s Woman of the Week is one of my favorite people, Ellen DeGeneres. Not only is she hilarious (The Ellen Show is a fantastic study break and de-stresser), but she’s a great role model for women and men everywhere. She finds a way to bring humor into almost every situation, reminding her viewers that life may get tough, but dealing with it is so much easier once you can find something to laugh about. She recently won the Mark Twain award, which “recognizes people who have had an impact on American society” in a comedic way. After winning, Ellen commented:

“It’s such an honor to receive the Mark Twain Prize. To get the same award that has been given to people like Bill Cosby, Tina Fey and Will Ferrell, it really makes me wonder… why didn’t I get this sooner?”

She gives back to those in need, and is confident in herself and provides a voice for millions of people struggling with bullies. After becoming a spokesperson for JC Penny earlier this year, she received a lot of backlash from people who claimed she wasn’t representing “traditional values” because she’s gay. There was a group that started “One Million Moms Against Ellen”, who tried to convince JC Penny to discontinue having Ellen as a spokesperson. Her response in the video below provides yet another reason for me to look up to her – she stands up for herself while still respecting the other side.

Because she is funny, confident, kind, and all-around fantastic, Ellen deserves to be this Wednesday’s Woman of the Week!
